This website is to promote the works of Des Khoury, Musician, Composer and Sculptor. Des was first and
foremost a music composer and arranger.
Although Des is well known as an artist from the late 70's when he was part of the Julian Laxton Band and
formed the jazz-fusion band "Theta", he put his music career on the back burner to do humanitarian work
around the world for 17 years. On returning from the USA in 1995 he wanted to start a family and pick up
his career as a musician. He decided to try his hand at sculpting to help finance the equipment required for
his music studio. This proved so successful that it has become a major part of the studio.
The first major sculpture (depicting Francois Pienaar) for the 1995 World Cup Rugby win was endorsed by
SARFU. Soon after that he was commissioned to create the trophy for the PGA Golfing Tournament, The
Platinum Classic.
One of his proud achievements was capturing the spirit of Nelson Mandela in a classic sculpture called "Madiba
Magic" (which depicts Madiba dancing on a pavement). This piece was endorsed by the Nelson Mandela
Millenium Fund in 1998 and was used for Mandela’s 80th Birthday. It was also used to raise funds for Kids Haven,
The Millenium Fund and
The Way to Happiness Foundation.
Since then Des got very busy on commissions from various companies for unique awards, including the Titans
of the Century Awards, prestigious Tribute Achievers Award, The Lengau Awards and many more. He was
chosen to design and sculpt the Golden Horn Awards for South Africa's own Academy Awards – a huge
acknowledgement for the work of this talented and creative man, and probably one of the most important
commissions that any South African artist could receive.
His sculptures have won Des various acclaims. He also received a personal endorsement by Nelson Mandela for the limited edition sculpture that became the symbol for the heavyweight title fight between Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman, dubbed "Thunder in Africa."
Des could be understandably proud to know that in his short career as a sculptor, his work is owned by international dignitaries and celebrities and that some of his work is being displayed in very prestigious galleries including the Belgravia Gallery in London.
Des has retired as a sculptor due to a terminal physical condition. He has spent his life working directly and indirectly through his art on humanitarian projects. It has always been his wish to create a vehicle to channel his life's work for the moral regeneration of society, primarily through "The Way to Happiness".
Des has handed over his studio to his wife Kareen to continue the legacy that they built in the studio.
Note, some of the pieces you will see in this website are not for sale.
